How Combat Level is Calculated

Step 1: Calculate Base Level

Base = (Defence + Hitpoints + ⌊Prayer ÷ 2⌋) ÷ 4

  • Each level in Defence adds +0.25 combat levels
  • Each level in Hitpoints adds +0.25 combat levels
  • Every 2 levels in Prayer adds +0.25 combat levels

Step 2: Determine Combat Style

The system calculates three values and uses the highest:

  • Melee: (Attack + Strength) × 0.325
  • Ranged: ⌊Ranged × 1.5⌋ × 0.325
  • Magic: ⌊Magic × 1.5⌋ × 0.325

Step 3: Final Combat Level

Combat Level = ⌊Base + max(Melee, Ranged, Magic)⌋

Maximum Levels:

  • Melee-based accounts: Up to level 126
  • Ranged/Magic-based accounts: Up to level 109

Frequently Asked Questions about Osrs Combat Calculator

Is this OSRS combat calculator accurate for the current 2026 game mechanics?

Yes, all calculations are pulled directly from the official Old School RuneScape Wiki formula, including the floor rounding on Ranged and Magic (⌊Ranged × 1.5⌋). The tool has been updated to reflect that there have been no changes to the core combat formula in recent years—what worked for a maxed main in 2023 still works today. You can verify any result by manually running the Wiki formula; the numbers will match exactly.

Do I need to download anything to use this free combat level calculator?

No. The tool runs 100% in your web browser using standard HTML, JavaScript, and Canvas for the charts. There’s no software to install, no mobile app to sideload, and no browser extension required. It works on desktop, tablet, and even large-screen phones, though the radar chart is easiest to read on a laptop or iPad. Because nothing is uploaded, you also don’t need an internet connection after the page loads—handy for playing on mobile data in low-signal areas.

Which skill gives the fastest combat level increase for a melee build?

For a pure melee build (level 90+ in Attack and Strength), the fastest gains come from training Defence or Hitpoints, as each level adds a flat 0.25 to your combat level. However, for most players below 80 Attack/Strength, training those two skills together is twice as effective: every two levels across both gives +0.65 total. The calculator’s “Level Planner” tab will show you your personal optimal skill based on your exact stats, because the answer changes depending on whether you’re level 40 or level 110.

Is it safe to use an online combat calculator for my OSRS main account?

Because this calculator never asks for your username, password, or any identifying information, the only risk is the same as typing numbers into any website: keyloggers on your own device. The tool itself does not store, transmit, or log any data. You can verify this by opening your browser’s developer tools (F12) and watching the Network tab—no requests are sent when you click “Calculate.” For absolute privacy, you can even save the webpage locally and use it completely offline.

What’s the maximum combat level in OSRS, and can this calculator help me plan for it?

The absolute maximum is 126 combat, achievable only by melee-based accounts with 99 in Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, and Prayer. Ranged and magic builds cap at 109. This calculator shows your “Levels to Max” and updates dynamically as you train. So if you’re a level 112 player wondering if you should push for 126, you can see exactly how many total skill levels you need—and the planner will recommend the most efficient order (usually alternating Defence and Hitpoints, with Prayer every other level).

Does this tool work for pure builds or restricted accounts (like 1 Defence pures)?

Absolutely. The formula works the same regardless of restrictions. A 1 Defence pure will see a very low base level, and the radar chart will clearly show that Defence and Hitpoints are dragging the total down. The recommendation engine adjusts accordingly—it might tell a 1 Defence pure to train Hitpoints (allowed) rather than Defence (blocked), or to push Ranged even higher to compensate. Just leave the restricted skill at its current level, and the calculator handles the math.

The Bottom Line: Stop Guessing, Start Planning

You don’t need a spreadsheet or a second monitor with the Wiki open. The OSRS combat calculator at HeyCalc turns the official formula into a visual, actionable plan. Punch in your stats. See your real level. Then follow the recommendation for the fastest path to 126—or to your personal goal, whether that’s 100 combat for the Warriors Guild or 109 for a maxed magic tank.
