How many 80 lb bags of concrete do I need for a 10x10 slab that’s 4 inches thick?

For a 10x10x4" slab, the volume is approximately 33.33 cubic feet (since 10×10×(4/12) = 33.33). An 80 lb bag yields 0.6 cubic feet, so you’d need about 56 bags. Can I use this tool for non-rectangular shapes like stairs or curved walls?

The current version handles rectangles (slabs) and cylinders (columns/piers) with high precision. For L-shaped footings or stair stringers, we recommend breaking the shape into rectangles (e.g., treads and risers separately), calculating each section’s volume, summing them, and then running the total cubic feet through the slab tab. For fully custom irregular forms, consult a structural engineer, but this estimator covers >90% of residential and light commercial projects.

Does the waste factor really matter for small projects like a single fence post?

Absolutely. For a single post hole that’s 8 inches wide and 2 feet deep, the theoretical volume is very small. But real-world digging is never perfect—holes can bell out at the bottom, or you might spill concrete while mixing a partial bag. A 10-15% waste factor on a tiny project might only add one extra bag, but that one bag prevents an afternoon delay. For small pours, we recommend 10% waste. For large slabs (over 200 sq ft), 5-7% is often enough if your forms are clean.

What’s the difference between concrete and cement? Does the calculator account for mix proportions?

Cement is a binding ingredient in concrete; concrete also contains sand, gravel, and water. Premix bags (Quikrete, Sakrete, etc.) are already proportioned—just add water. This calculator assumes you’re using standard premix bag yields (0.3 cu ft for 40 lb, 0.45 cu ft for 60 lb, 0.6 cu ft for 80 lb). It does not handle raw cement, sand, and aggregate separately because that’s a site-mix scenario, which is rare for small-to-medium projects. If you’re site-mixing, first calculate your total cubic feet, then use a concrete mix ratio calculator (1:2:3 for cement:sand:gravel) separately.

How accurate is the cubic yard conversion for ordering ready-mix trucks?

Very accurate. The tool calculates cubic feet precisely (length × width × thickness, or π × radius² × height for columns), then divides by 27 (cubic feet per cubic yard). For large projects (over 10 cubic yards), you would order ready-mix by the yard, not bags. The cubic yards output in our results is designed exactly for that scenario—you can give that number directly to your ready-mix supplier. Just remember to add the waste factor to your order, as trucks can have slight shortages.

Why would I choose 40 lb bags over 80 lb bags?

40 lb bags are easier to lift and mix by hand, especially for smaller DIY projects or when working alone. However, they yield only 0.3 cu ft each, meaning you’ll buy and handle twice as many bags for the same volume. For a large slab, that’s back-breaking. 80 lb bags are standard for most contractors because fewer bags means less packaging waste and faster placement.
