About AAFCO Standards: The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) establishes nutrient profiles that ensure complete and balanced nutrition for dogs at different life stages. Foods meeting these standards are labeled as suitable for "growth and reproduction" (puppies, pregnant/nursing dogs) or "adult maintenance."

Important Notes:

  • All values are expressed on a dry matter basis (moisture removed)
  • Puppy foods must meet the higher "growth and reproduction" standards
  • If a food meets puppy standards, it automatically meets adult standards
  • Large breed puppies have additional calcium restrictions (max 1.8%)

Leucine 0.72% 0.59% % dry matter
Lysine 0.77% 0.63% % dry matter

Life Stage Feeding Guidelines

Puppy Stage (0-12 months)

  • Energy Needs: 2-3× adult maintenance (rapid growth phase)
  • Protein: Minimum 22.5% (supports muscle development)
  • Fat: Minimum 8.5% (brain development, energy)
  • Feeding Frequency: 3-4 meals/day (0-4 months), 2-3 meals/day (4-12 months)
  • Key Nutrients: DHA for brain development, calcium/phosphorus for bones
  • Special Note: Large breed puppies need controlled calcium (max 1.8%) to prevent skeletal issues

Adult Stage (1-7 years)

  • Energy Needs: 1.6-1.8× RER (maintenance phase)
  • Protein: Minimum 18% (muscle maintenance)
  • Fat: Minimum 5.5% (energy, coat health)
  • Feeding Frequency: 1-2 meals/day
  • Focus: Weight management, dental health, joint support for active dogs

Senior Stage (7+ years)

  • Energy Needs: Reduced by 15-20% (slower metabolism)
  • Protein: 25-30% high-quality protein (prevent muscle loss)
  • Fat: 12-15% (reduced but adequate)
  • Key Additions: Glucosamine/chondroitin (joints), antioxidants (cognitive health), omega-3 (inflammation)
  • Monitor: Kidney function (phosphorus control), weight gain tendency

Pregnant/Nursing Dogs

  • Energy Needs: 3-8× RER (depending on litter size)
  • Protein: 25-30% (fetal development, milk production)
  • Fat: 15-20% (energy-dense nutrition)
  • Feeding Strategy: Free-choice feeding during lactation
  • Supplements: Folic acid, iron, calcium (vet supervised)

Activity Level Multipliers

Activity Level Description Multiplier
Low Indoor dogs, minimal exercise, sedentary lifestyle 1.2-1.4×
Moderate Daily walks (30-60 min), occasional play 1.6-1.8×
High Active dogs, running, agility, frequent play 2.0-2.5×
Very High Working dogs, sled dogs, competitive athletes 3.0-5.0×

Body Condition Scoring Guide

How to assess your dog's body condition:

  • Underweight: Ribs easily visible, no fat cover, obvious waist from above
  • Ideal: Ribs palpable with slight fat cover, visible waist, abdominal tuck
  • Overweight: Ribs difficult to feel, thick fat layer, no visible waist
  • Obese: Ribs not palpable under thick fat, broad back, distended abdomen

Adjustment Strategy: If your dog needs to lose weight, reduce calories by 10-20% and increase exercise. For weight gain, increase calories by 10-15% with high-quality protein.

Häufige Fragen zu Hundernährungsberechner

Wie sicher ist der Hundernährungsberechner? Geht meine Daten an Dritte?

Sehr sicher.
